Overview
Panch Kedar refers to a group of five sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. These temples are considered highly significant in Hindu mythology and are an important pilgrimage destination for devotees of Lord Shiva.
The legend associated with Panch Kedar is linked to the epic Mahabharata. According to the legend, after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings and forgiveness for the sins committed during the war, particularly the killing of their own relatives. Lord Shiva, wanting to avoid them, took the form of a bull and hid in various parts of Uttarakhand.
The Panch Kedar temples are named after the specific body parts of Lord Shiva that are believed to have appeared at each location.
Tour Highlights
- Kedarnath: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s hump. It is the most well-known among the Panch Kedar temples and is located at an altitude of around 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). Kedarnath is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, considered the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva.
- Madhyamaheshwar: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s navel. It is located at an altitude of approximately 3,490 meters (11,450 feet) and requires a trek through picturesque landscapes to reach it.
- Tungnath: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s arms. Situated at an altitude of about 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), it is considered the highest Shiva temple in the world and is a part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage.
- Rudranath: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s face. It is located at an altitude of approximately 2,286 meters (7,500 feet) and requires a trek through beautiful meadows and forests.
- Kalpeshwar: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s hair. It is located at a lower altitude compared to the other four temples, around 2,134 meters (7,001 feet), and is relatively accessible.
The Panch Kedar pilgrimage is considered a spiritually significant journey, and many devotees undertake it to seek blessings and to cleanse themselves of their sins. The temples are generally open for visitors only during the summer months, as the region remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall during the winter. The trek to these temples is often challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks and lush green valleys.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
